California builders are now required to include solar power and battery storage in many of their new and renovated commercial structures and high-rise residential projects in hopes to increase on-site renewable energy generation!

On Aug. 11, 2021, the California Energy Commission adopted the 2022 Energy Code. This code encourages the use of efficient electric heat pumps, expands solar photovoltaic and battery storage standards and establishes electric-ready requirements for new homes.

The 2022 Energy Code was approved in December by the California Building Standards Commission and is now being included in the California Building Standards Code, meaning all  buildings whose permit applications are applied for on or after Jan. 1, 2023, must comply with the 2022 Energy Code.

Who does this specifically affect?

Commercial buildings affected by the plan include:

  • Hotels
  • Offices
  • Medical offices and clinics
  • Retail and grocery stores
  • Restaurants
  • Schools
  • Civic spaces like theaters, auditoriums and convention centers
